Norman "Red" Hawley (1924-2017) was a highly accomplished jazz drummer whose musical journey spanned several decades and left an indelible mark on the world of Dixieland jazz. Born on December 30, 1924, in Holley, New York, Red displayed an early passion for music, taking up the drums at the young age of 13. This early start paved the way for a lifelong career in jazz. Red Hawley's musical talent led him on a remarkable path across the United States, where he performed with some of the most renowned bands and musicians in the genre. His notable collaborations included playing with the Duke of Dixieland, a band with whom he graced television screens on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show, the Timex Hour, and the Garry Moore Show. Additionally, Red was a valued member of The Salt City Five (and Six), The Dixieland Ramblers, Don Goldie's Jazz Express (and his Dangerous Jazz Band), Flip Phillips, and Parke Frankenfield's Swinging Dixie Band, among numerous other bands and trios. One of Red Hawley's most cherished memories was recording with the legendary Louis Armstrong and The Dukes of Dixieland. This experience was second only to performing at the illustrious Carnegie Hall with the Dukes of Dixieland.
