André Fernandes is a Portuguese guitarist born in Lisbon on March 10, 1976. He studied in Lisbon's Hot Club (where he currently teaches), and in 1996 was awarded a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music, which he attended for two years, until moving to New York City. During his stay in the US he studied with Hal Crook, John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Mick Goodrick and Kenny Werner, among others. He was the recipient of the Stephen Holland Award for Outstanding Musicianship. Although strongly rooted in jazz, he has played with musicians from all genres, like Lee Konitz, Mário Laginha, Chris Cheek, Maria João, Cyro Baptista, Ohad Talmor, John Hollenbeck and Theo Bleckman, Dan Weiss, Pete Rende, Bill McHenry, Jochen Rueckert, Perico Sambeat, Julian Arguelles, David Binney, AviShai Cohen, Eli Degibri, Pedro Moreira, Alexi Tuomarila, Bernardo Moreira, Jorge Reis, Carlos Barretto, Akiko Pavolka, Jarmo Savolainen, Phil Markowitz and João Paulo Esteves da Silva, among others. In 2002 he co-founded the Tone of a Pitch label and studios, where he worked as a producer and engineer and released 6 albums as a leader, all of them very well received by the press.
