Japanese-American multidisciplinary artist (b. 2 September 1977, Fukushima). Ei Arakawa works in performance art, sculpture and installation, often creating hybrid multimedia projects and breaking boundaries between the artist and the audience, resulting in spontaneous live actions. Arakawa grew up in Japan and naturalized as a US citizen in 2019. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Arakawa arrived in the United States in 1998 and attended School of Visual Arts, NYC between 2000 and 2004, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He continued studying at Bard College in New York, graduating in 2006 with MFA in Film/Video, and also partaking in the Whitney Museum Of American Art's Independent Study Program in 2005–06. Ei Arakawa often works in collaboration with other artists, including his brother Tomoo Arakawa (b. 1975), Gela Patashuri, Stefan and Sergei Tcherepnin. He has had numerous teaching appointments since 2014, including Visiting Lecturer on Art, Film & Visual Studies at Harvard University in 2018–19.
