American Jazz multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, arranger, and bandleader. Born in Texas. Died on February 14, 1986 in Georgia. He played numerous instruments including saxophone, clarinet, flute, and more. He worked on albums with Margaret Whiting, Julius La Rosa, Dubbie Spivak, Dardanelle, David Whitfield, and many others. He also had a quintet with Bob Shaw (17) (guitar), Paul F. Mitchell (piano)1, Otis Gould (drums), and John Ivey (bass). He was the president of the Atlanta, Georgia chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and a national trustee for that organization. He was instrumental in the 1983 decision to attempt to bring the proposed Grammy Hall of Fame to Atlanta but his untimely death stopped that from becoming a reality. Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, has a yearly scholarship in his honor: the Sam Wilhoit Jazz Endowed Scholarship in Music. Also associated with Sam Wilhoit Studios and Sam Wilhoit Productions.
