American tattoo artist, illustrator and former 3D animator (b. January 1963, South Fallsburg, New York); lives and works in Portland, Oregon. Greg Kulz has been widely regarded as part of the influential "Modern Primitive Movement," pioneering several modern techniques, such as fluorescent and luminescent ink. Kulz grew up in New York state, also spending some time in Florence, Italy, in his childhood. Gregory studied film at San Francisco Art Institute, graduating with his Bachelor's degree in 1985. He worked as a Tattoo Artist and Assistant Manager at Erno Tattoos in California between 1989 and 2002. Greg Kulz's works appeared in Modern Primitives (89) book, co-edited by V. Vale and Andrea Juno and published by RE/Search Publications, alongside interviews and essays with Fakir Musafar, Leo Zulueta, Henk Schiffmacher (a.k.a. Henky Penky), Genesis and Paula P-Orridge, the Church of Satan's founder Anton LaVey, and Bob Flanagan's BDSM master and collaborator Sheree Rose. Before focusing on tattoo art, Kulz also worked as a prolific 3D animator, character designer and visual artist, trained at Pixar and collaborating with 2B1 Multimedia Inc. and numerous other studios and commercial clients.
