Bluegrass Reunion

Red Allen gave me my first job as a record producer ("Red Allen and Frank Wakefield" Folkways FA2408) in 1963 and my first job as a bluegrass mandolin player in 1965. In 1967, Herb Pedersen and I played together in the "Smoky Grass Boys," a short-lived California aggregation, and later on in "Here Today" with Jim Buchanan. Herb and Red found themselves in Nashville subbing for Scruggs and Flatt in the late 60s, and in 1973, Garcia and I joined forces in "Old & In The Way." Jim Buchanan joined my quintet in the early '80's, as did Jim Kerwin who also plays in the Garcia/Grisman band. Although this group is one which never played together previously, it felt like a reunion of kindred spirits... a Bluegrass Reunion. ~David Grisman, December 1991
