Hungarian-born American violinist. Born: December 27, 1900, Rutka, Hungary Died: January 03, 1962, Los Angeles, California, USA A child prodigy who is said to have learned to play the piano before he could speak, De Kerekjarto studied violin from age 5 with Jeno Hubay in Budapest. At age 12, he toured Europe and performed for the royal families of Belgium, Austria, Bulgaria, Italy and Rumania. In 1916, Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph appointed the 16 year old commissioner for music. After World War I, De Kerekjarto emigrated first to Germany, then to the United States, which he reached in 1920. There, he worked as a popular concert violinist, playing Carnegie Hall in New York City to great acclaim. Later in life, he performed Hungarian gypsy parts in Hollywood movies, such as the gypsy leader in the 1951 MGM production "Rich, Young, And Pretty."
