Carlos Alberto Martins

Music journalist and cultural researcher, born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1946. Active in several radios in his home town in the Sixties and Seventies, also as a record and shows producer, foreign correspondent for Billboard, Prensario, Jazz Journal International, and Show Press, contributor with liner notes to several record releases, has also written for different newspapers. In 1986 he published a book on the popular music movement in Uruguay during dictatorship: “Música Popular Uruguaya 1973-1982. Un fenómeno de comunicación alternativa” (Claeh-Banda Oriental, 1986). Bearing his Portuguese nationality, he moved to Beligum in 1982, to study at the Louvain-la-Neuve University (PhD in Communicatons), then working for two years at the very beginning of the European Comisions’ MEDIA Programme. Moved again in 1989, this time to Madrid, where he worked mainly in the fields of audiovisual and cultural policies, writing occasionally for music or cultural issues professional and academic publications. In Belgium, he published an excerpt of his doctoral thesis: “Communication, morphogenèse et identité culturelle” (Ciaco, 1988).
