Swedish clarinetist, born May 6, 1974. Ek began his studies for Hermann Stefansson. He started at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm in 1994 where he studied for Professor Sölve Kingstedt. He has also studied for Håkan Rosengren, Karl Leister, Yehuda Gilad and Mitchell Lurie. As a clarinetist, he specializes in contemporary music. He has always focused on chamber music and has recorded over 20 CDs and premiered a large number of works with various ensembles and has toured in Europe, the USA and Asia. He has been a member of the ensemble Norrbotten NEO since 2007, Sweden's only full-time ensemble for contemporary music. As a soloist, Robert Ek has performed and collaborated with composers and musicians and conductors from different parts of the world and has been part of projects involving dance, musical theater, choreography and film. Robert has been a doctoral student since 2019, where the topic of his dissertation is “The augmented clarinet in intermedial chamber music performance.” The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the artistic possibilities from a multimodal perspective on musical performances with a focus on how sensor data from musicians' movements can be a structural part in creating intermedial performances.
