German songwriter and choir leader (born October 5, 1881 in Pforzheim – died July 30, 1936 in Heidelberg) The son of an innkeeper, Sonnet studied music at the conservatory in Karlsruhe. As a student, he wrote the march "Badens Stern" [The Star of Badensia] in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of Grand Duke Friedrich I. of Baden's ascension to the throne, and was awarded with a scholarship for the rest of his studies. After graduation, he served as a choir director in various German cities (e.g., Rostock, Ulm, and Göttingen) before returning to Pforzheim. As a composer, he is responsible for a number of songs that continue to belong to the standard repertoire of German choirs, such as "In die blühende Welt", "Weihnachtsglocken," and "Grüß mir die Reben, Vater Rhein."
