Born August 23, 1928 in Savannah, Georgia. As a child he developed a good ear for music when his mother, who was a Southern plantation worker, taught him spiritual songs. At the age of 13 he had saved enough money to buy a guitar and some books on music. He taught himself to read music and play the guitar. Tedd performed many jobs from driving railroad spikes to dishwashing in order to further his career in music. After studying theory in harmony and music for two years at the American Theater Wing in New York, he started to compose folk songs about the South.
