American songwriter and lyricist. Born April 18, 1872 · New Orleans, Louisiana. Died June 14, 1927 · New York City, New York. He was educated at Toule College Military School and Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He wrote vaudeville sketches for Lillian Russell, Nat Wills and others. Later, he also wrote material for early motion pictures of Marie Dressler, Charlie Chaplin, Lon Chaney, Pearl White, Mabel Normand, and more. He charted with the song "Oh! Frenchy" by Arthur Fields in 1918 when it hit #8 on the U.S. charts (co-written by Con Conrad). Also known for songs "Dixie Ain't What Dixie Used to Be", "I Leave It All to You", "Out In the New Mown Hay", and "Short and Sweet".
