Fascinated by the possibilities of electronic music Alexander M. Korn and a school mate founded the adiaphora project, a project that has its roots in the dark spheres of the German gothic and dark wave scene. Idols and influences were bands from Goethes Erben and Das Ich. adiaphora recorded two demo tapes and played several gigs in north Germany - then disbanded in 1996. With new ideas Alexander M. Korn started a sub-project called Projekt Blauland. He transformed poetry written by a friend from Cologne into dreamlike soundscapes. His new main project das Buch & das Bild also had significant lyrical impact and merged a much broader spectrum of music than adiaphora and Projekt Blauland. With das Buch & das Bild Alexander M. Korn realized his idea to create complex music with meaningful lyrics, independent from other musical influences. The years between 1996 and 1999 brought forth many bigger and smaller releases in limited editions, distributed by the independent label Amöbenklang. In all live stage events since the early days of adiaphora, Alexander M. Korn was supported by Kay Lipinski on the bass guitar. In 2000 some musicians from Lipinski's instrumental heavy project joined das Buch & das Bild. They played several concerts in Hamburg and Rostock and at the Wave & Gotik Treffen in Leipzig, which were well received. Finally Jens Ballaschke on guitar and Anke Vangerow as second vocalist completed the project of loosely grouped musicians to create a real band. In 2003 the das Buch & das Bild band members decided to drop their name and to call themselves FREIDEUTER instead. This pun that playfully combines freebooter and free thinker seemed the adequate name for a musical identitythat allows any style and that regards words as an expression of emotions and thoughts.
