Slovak politician. Born 10th January 1913 (Bratislava) – † 18th November 1991 (Bratislava) President of Czechoslovakia from 29th May 1975 to 10th December 1989. Was the most important Slovak communist politician of the second half of the 20th century in Czechoslovakia. During the 1960s, he was one of the main personalities of the reformist stream in the Communist Party of Czecho-Slovakia, performing as a loyal follower of Alexander Dubček during the Prague Spring. In April 1968 he became Deputy Chairman of the Czech-Slovak Government, where he was one of the leading initiators of the Constitutional Act on the Federative Arrangement of the Czech-Slovak Republic. In the November 1989 he was one of the communist politicians who refused to address the situation by force. After the events of November 1989, Husak appointed the "Government of National Understanding" on December 10, 1989, under the leadership of Slovak Calf, and then abdicated from the position of President of the Republic. In the end, he helped to elicit President Havel and harmed Dubcek.
