Sis. Hulah Gene Hurley was a gospel singer. She was a member of Rev.James Lofton And His Church Of Our Prayer Choir also known as The Loftonaires (singing lead on the song “Great Day,” Prosperity and Vee Jay, 1954) and a regular soloist with Rev. Charles A. Craig’s famed choir, the The Voices Of Tabernacle. Her high soprano voice could be heard soaring above the choir. As the original soloist, the song she is most remembered for, and one she reprised for the Detroit Remembers project on the S.O.G. label, is “Jesus Will.” The song was later recorded by The Barrett Sisters and Anita Wilson (2). Later, Hulah Gene and her daughter Carolyne Gene recorded a number of singles and LPs for Savoy Records and also recorded an album with Rev. James Cleveland. Recently, she was director of music at New Liberty Baptist Church in Detroit. She was considered to be one of Detroit's most treasured jewels. She passed in 2006 of a heart attack following post operation complications.
