Canadian country music singer, songwriter and guitarist born August 27, 1939 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He started his performing career at age 12 but his solo recording career began in Montréal with Rodeo Records in the early 1960s. In 1965 he won the RPM Award for Most Promising Male Country Singer. In the late 1960s he moved to Calgary but by 1970 was back in Montréal again. In 1971 he ran for Prime Minister of Canada as a publicity stunt, earning himself the sobriquet "Prime Minister of Country Music" in the process. In March 1977 he underwent surgery on his vocal cords and by 1979 he took a long-term hiatus from his musical career, only occasionally composing and performing for special events over the next few decades.
