The Karelian national song and dance ensemble Kantele was officially founded in June 1, 1936. The founder and first leader of the ensemble was Виктор Гудков (Viktor Gudkov). After Viktor Gudkov's death in 1942, the ensemble was lead by Яков Геншафт (Yakov Genshaft). 1947-1950: Абрам Голланд (Abram Holland) worked as the conductor and artistic director. March 1953: Лев Косинский (Leo Kosinsky) was appointed as the director and conductor. 1959: Семён Карп (Simon Karp) was appointed as the artistic director. 1971-1976: Борис Костантиновский (Boris Kostantinovsky) worked as the artistic director. 1977-1979: Дмитрий Утикеев (Dmitry Utikeyev) was the director. 1987: Вячеслав Сеидов (Vyacheslav Seidov) was appointed as the leader.
