Singing sensations The Barry Sisters originally came from Langley Road, Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom and were the toast of Tyneside in the late 50s and 60s, performing alongside a list of acts that read like a who’s who of light entertainment. From teen heartthrob Cliff Richard to household names like Ken Dodd, Des O’Connor and Morecambe and Wise, the tuneful trio – June, Angela and Anne – knew them all. The sisters’ maiden name was Hawley - their stage name having been borrowed from brother Barry because it was catchy and easier to remember. Their stage name did cause them to occasionally be mistaken for an American duo who also called themselves The Barry Sisters. When Angela decided to leave and get married, her place was filled by Sylvia Scarill, thus compilation albums may list all four singer's names. In 1961 Angela re-joined the group and as 'the Four Barry Sisters', played in the Jimmy Logan Christmas Show at Newcastle Theatre Royal. Annette (Ann, Anne) Hawley Anne married Wing Commander Robert 'Robbie' Gilvary in the 60's and moved to Germany after the Barry Sisters split up as a group. Anne died age 33 on 24th December 1983 in Germany after a fall. She was brought back to be buried in Newcastle. Angela Hawley Angela left the group and married, then rejoined the group in late 1961 for an unknown amount of time. June Hawley Sylvia Scarill
