International Theremin Orchestra was established by Elisabeth Schimana to unite perfomers on theremin and other touchless instruments. The initial concert Touchless 01 took place on 4 December 1997 as a distributed event, with performers in three countries connected over the Internet: Schimana (voice, moog, theremin, master mix), Günther Gessert (theremin, moog), Andrei Smirnov (theremin), Yuri Spitsin (power glove) and Lana Aksenova (voice, theremin) in Moscow; Andrew Garton, Christof Kurzmann, Sergio Messina and Scanner on theremins and sampler in Vienna; and Pedro López (theremin, sampler) in Madrid. The resulting performance was simultaneously broadcasted on Radio in Russia, Spain and Austria. The second program Touchless II was presented in Austria on the 4th and 6th of April 1998, when the International Theremin Orchestra gave concerts at the Kunst Halle Krems, Minoritenkirche and the Ars Electronica Center, Linz. The same year, Orchestra released their debut CD with a recording of distributed radio-concert in 1997 and the performance at Minoritenkirche. Theremin Orchestra also gave concert with Lydia Kavina at Porgy & Bess in April 2001.
