French orchestra, based in Paris, active from 1935-38. Its principal conductor was Charles Munch. Other conductors included Gustave Cloëz and Darius Milhaud. There were other orchestras with the same name: - Orchestre Philharmonique De Paris (2) created in 1950 (also known as Orchestre de la Société Philharmonique de Paris), conducted mainly by Jules Gressier and René Leibowitz, which recorded for the labels Classic and Le Chant du Monde. - in 1958, the American conductor Leon Barzin founded a third Orchestre Philharmonique De Paris (3), which was active until the mid-60s. - in 1987, a fourth Orchestre Philharmonique de Paris is founded, Orchestre Philharmonique De Paris (4), mainly for recording soundtracks under the direction of Lalo Schifrin. Its first concert was given on 26 January 1988 at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
