Florence Kirk

American operatic soprano (dramatic). (1909 – 1999) A student of Elisabeth Schumann at the Curtis Institute of Music. She performed with several important American orchestras and opera companies and also in South America. During her run as Lady Macbeth (New York, 1942) she had an infamous temperamental outburst in which she refused to perform over a dispute involving her costume. This led to opera star Regina Resnik's professional opera debut as Lady Macbeth. In 1944 she made her debut at the Met. In the 1950s she was a guest at the Greek National Opera. One of her final concerts was a recital of Greek music, both ancient and modern, given at Gettysburg College on April 25, 1958
