American digital designer, painter, illustrator and contemporary visual artist (b. March 1952, New York City); lives and works in Staunton, Shenandoah Valley in Virginia since 2017. Alfred H. "Hank" Grebe creates oil paintings, photographs and computer graphics. He is best known for working at NYIT's legendary Computer Graphics Lab in the mid-1980s. Grebe also contributed visual effects and graphics to Shrek 2 (2004). Hank is the grandson of Alfred H. Grebe (1895—1935), one of the pioneers of the radio broadcasting industry. Alfred "Hank" Grebe grew up on Long Island, New York. He studied drawing, painting and art history at Cornell University (1970–71), The School of the Museum Of Fine Arts Boston (71–74), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1979–83), where he earned a Bachelor of Graphic Arts degree. Soon after graduation, Hank Grebe joined the New York Institute Of Technology, employed at CG Labs between 1983 and 86 and involved in the R&D and production of broadcast 3D computer animations using proprietary UNIX software. Grebe further collaborated with several other prominent tech companies, including AT&T/Bell Labs (1988–93), where he worked on GUI and multimedia software prototypes for Sun Microsystems and Time Warner Inc (1993–94).
