VLADIMIR PLESHAKOV was born in Shanghai, China, of Russian parents. He began to study piano at the age of four, first with Vladimir Kostevich, later with Boris Lazareff. In Sydney, Australia, he studied with Alexander Sverjensky and Eugene Goossens at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music. In the United States his mentors were Adolph Baller and Grant Johannesen. Vladimir Pleshakov has presented many premieres of neglected master works past and present. He has unearthed sonatas by Woelfl, Rust and Asioli; he has reintroduced important compositions of Shostakovich, Medtner, Vorisek and Szymanowski. He held a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stanford Universi-ty. For twelve years he served as head of the piano department of the Yehudi Menuhin Music Program for the gifted at the Nueva Learning Center in Hillsborough, Calif. In 1974 he found-ed, together with Ruth Kaneko, the Pleshakov-Kaneko Music Institute in Palo Alto, Calif., for teaching and research. He is also one of the founders of Concerts and Scholarships, Inc., devoted to the support of young performers and composers.
