American visual artist, character actor, photographer, independent filmmaker and writer (b. June 1958, Syracuse, New York); currently divides his time between Dublin and New York City. Peter McGough is best known for his decades-long duo collaboration with David McDermott. Between 1980 and 1995, McDermott & McGough re-enacted their lives as Victorian-era mid-XIX-century gentlemen. They dressed in period-correct attire, produced all artworks with obsolete and antiquated techniques, and resided in a refurbished candle-lit house without electricity. McGough studied in New York, graduating from the Syracuse University in 1976 and the Fashion Institute of Technology in 78. In 1996, Peter McGough acted in Julian Schnabel's biopic film Basquiat, based on the life of a renowned NYC artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and featuring an all-star cast with Benicio Del Toro, David Bowie, Gary Oldman, Jeffrey Wright (2), Michael Wincott, Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, and Courtney Love, among others. In September 2019, McGough published a book, I've Seen the Future and I'm Not Going: the Art Scene and Downtown New York in the 1980s, issued by Pantheon Books.
