David Luther is a saxophonist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger originally from Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and graduated with a BFA in Jazz Studies, then soon relocated to New York City, where he lived until 2017. An early focus on jazz and classical evolved into an exploration of songwriting, and a deep love for rhythm n’ blues and rock n’ roll—particularly that earlier era where the tenor saxophone reigned as the original lead guitar, and dancing was all but compulsory. In the fall of 2016, David joined Dweezil Zappa’s band (formerly Zappa Plays Zappa) on lead baritone vocals, saxophones, and guitar, faced with the honorable task of channeling the voice of Frank Zappa himself. David was a member of Meat Loaf's band from 2006-2016, which has involved a number of world tours, national TV appearances, plus several albums and concert DVDs. He has also appeared with Bettye Lavette, Katy Perry, Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Reuben Wilson, The Temptations, Clarence Clemmons, and the Easy Star All-Stars. He recently recorded his first album of original music with a new project entitled Ivy Mike, the release of which is forthcoming.
