American baritone vocalist and composer (born August 30, 1880 in Jersey City, NJ – died December 13, 1955 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida) Apart from being a singer, Cairns also served as director of the artist and repertoire department for the Victor label. Later, he was the music director of the Firestone Hour on radio. Cairns recorded more than 300 titles for the Victor label between 1906 and 1932, usually singing as baritone, sometimes taking on bass vocals. He sang with and conducted Victor's Trinity Choir. He also recorded with the Victor Mixed Chorus, Victor Opera Company, and Victor Light Opera Company. Occasionally, he would even sing jazz, as on Victor 18722 (1921), where he and Victor studio conductor Edward T. King sing the title phrase of "Sweet Mamma (Papa's Getting Mad)" three times. Starting in 1929, Cairns began to serve as session supervisor. As a composer, Cairns wrote sacred music. He was best known for his adaptation and musical setting of the Twenty-Third Psalm.
