Maurer was born in 1967 in Ried, Upper Austria. At the age of seven he began to play recorder, clarinet and saxophone. From 1988 on he studied saxophone at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he has taught classical saxophone starting in 1991, and habilitated in 2003. In classical music he worked with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. In jazz he is known for his work with the Vienna Art Orchestra, Kenny Wheeler, Karl Ratzer, Natalie Cole, Joe Zawinul, Hans Koller and Dorretta Carter. He co-founded the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra and is a member of the group Saxofour. He also played with The Supremes and Liza Minnelli . “Travelling Hard” with the Robert Bachner Quintet won the 2006 Hans Koller Prize for the best CD.
