American songwriter, singer, and pianist, active from the 1930s to the 1950s Born in Florida to a family of gospel singers, Cornett left to New York in 1935. She won an amateur talent show in New Jersey, which led to a gig in a New York hotel with the Ozzie Nelson orchestra. NBC talent scouts heard her, and she ended up hosting a 15-minute morning show, where she sang, played piano, recited poems, and chatted with the listeners. She also was a featured singer on the CBS evening Coca-Cola Radio Song Shop. With the help of Dinah Shore she got an audition with Xavier Cugat, with whom she toured. Struggling to make ends meet, she and her husband turned to songwriting. Some of their best known songs include "With This Ring I Thee Wed," "All That Glitters Is Not Gold," and "Slap Her Down Ag'in, Paw".
