George Jones (born Oct. 5, 1936, in Richmond, Va., died Sept 27, 2008) moved to the Youngstown area as a child, where his father got work in a steel mill, and spent most of his life in the area. He attended Campbell Memorial High School. After high school, Jones joined the U.S. Air Force, where he sang in a vocal group with other servicemen. He was in the Air Force when he wrote “Rama Lama.” George "Wydell" Jones had been the lead singer for the Edsels. In 1965, after the Edsels disbanded, he started on a short, at least recording wise, career as a solo singer. Since there was already the country George Jones, he went by the name of George Wydell. Jones also managed several gospel music groups in later years, including The Jones Gospel Singers, which was comprised of his family members.
