Kenneth Cooper (May 31, 1941 - March 13, 2021) was an American harpsichordist, pianist, and pedagogue. Born in New York City, Cooper's musical journey began early, and he became renowned for his contributions to classical music. He was not only a pianist and harpsichordist but also a distinguished musicologist and conductor. Cooper's performances were marked by their historical accuracy and artistic expression, captivating audiences worldwide. Beyond classical music, his versatility extended to the world of ragtime, where he showcased his improvisational skills and deep appreciation for early American music traditions. As a dedicated music educator, Cooper held teaching positions at several institutions, nurturing the talents of aspiring musicians. He was a scholar who delved into the intricacies of musicology, enriching our understanding of historical music practices. Kenneth Cooper's legacy endures through his recordings, performances, and educational contributions. Kenneth has performed at the Grand Canyon, Washington Square, Norfolk, and Little Orchestra Society’s Vivaldi festivals. Most recently, he has appeared at Music@Menlo, Aspen, Marlboro, Chamber Music Northwest, and Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center. He has made numerous recordings for CBS-Sony, Vanguard, EMI, Bridge, and other labels, collaborating with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Susan Rotholz, and Annie Kavafian. He was on the faculty of Columbia University and the Manhattan School of Music, where he was Chair of the Harpsichord Department and Director of the Baroque Aria Ensemble.
