October 19, 1907 – October 27, 1983. Public school educator, syndicated newspaper columnist, and a pivotal figure in the promotion and acceptance of Black music on radio. Williams became the first black radio DJ in Memphis on WDIA, where he ruled the airwaves from from 1948 to 1972. Williams was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, the National Radio Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, and the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame.
