Helen Thorington began her career as a writer with short stories and other fictional forms that were published in small press magazines and journals throughout the 70s. Thorington early sound works include compositions for dancers and works for radio. Her productions for National Public Radio were among the first radio art works broadcast nationally. From 1977 to 1998 Thorington continued to produce for radio. Her programs were aired nationally and internationally in over fifteen countries. Commissions included works for RAI (Italian radio), RNE (Spanish Radio) and ORF (Austrian radio). Thorington also composed sound scores for film. Additionally Thorington created sound/music for installation, and performance. Thorington returned to writing in 1994 to produceNorth Country for radio, CD-ROM and the World Wide Web. She initiated the online performance eventAdrift and contributed multiple text narratives and sound scores from 1997-2001. Thorington is the Co-Director of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. (aka Ether-Ore), and the founder and producer of the national weekly radio series, New American Radio (1987-1998), and "theTurbulence" (1996-present) web site.
