Alan Balter

Alan Balter (1945–1998) was an American conductor and clarinetist, a music director of The Memphis Symphony (MSO) from 1984 to 1998. For more than twenty years, Balter served as a principal clarinetist in various orchestras, including Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He won the first prize in the prestigious MIN-ON International Concours for Conductors in 1976. The conductor debuted in Atlanta with Akron Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. During his 14-year tenure at MSO, the Orchestra developed from a part-time group to a nationally recognized ensemble with greatly expanded repertoire.
