Þorlákur Kristinsson Morthens (born October 3, 1953), better known as Þorlákur Morthens or Tolli is an Icelandic artist who has been known for his landscape and abstract works since the nineties. Tolli's works are owned by the National Gallery of Iceland, the Reykjavík Art Museum and the University of Iceland Art Museum, as well as several institutions in Europe and the United States. He's the brother of Bubba Morthens. Bubbi Morthens Tolli was born and raised in Reykjavík. He has been painting and drawing since a young age and came from an artistic home. He began studying at the Icelandic School of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1978 and graduated from the Department of Living Arts in 1983. After that he went to the Hochschule der Künste in West Berlin under the guidance of Professor Karl-Horst Hödicke and returned home in 1985 and has worked as an artist ever since. Prior to that, he had been a fisherman off the coast of Iceland, both on fishing boats and trawlers. He was also a migrant worker in various seas around Iceland and a lumberjack in northern Norway. Tolli's first exhibitions were in Reykjavík and Akureyri in 1982 and his first solo exhibition was then in the rubber studio in Reykjavík in 1984. From 1982 to 1992 he showed twenty-two solo exhibitions in Iceland and abroad, and participated in seventeen group exhibitions. Tolli has run a studio in Berlin and held exhibitions in Germany, Denmark, Monaco, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Korea.
