Blues singer, born New Orleans, La., 4 July 1921. "My learning to sing was a gift and also my playing, although it was cultivated by different teachers as my father was an outstanding preacher. He was pastoring several churches and was against my singing the blues as I started out very young - fifteen years of age. I was raised in several cities as my father was travelling most of the time, but I was raised to womanhood in Illinois." In 1969, she was active in gospel music in Chicago.
