C Powers

C Powers' sound is informed by years spent collecting records in Atlanta and Chicago, honing crowd control skills in the foggy clubs of London, helping foster queer spaces for dancing in Savannah GA, and solidarity dance nights in Portland OR. Cecilia's sets and releases combine elements of gay camp, anti-sophistication, extended turntable technique, and a sense of juxtaposition molded by a DJ career that has strayed from the traditional "club" spaces. Imagine a girl that grew up buying her first DnB & FL Breaks vinyls in late 90's Atlanta GA then going on to join one of the most chaotic drag families of the east coast while also paying bills as a wedding dj in the coastal region of Georgia. If you can conjure this crowd-pleasing combination then you have a clue: not much point in going into a C Powers set with expectations. Cecilia has been heavily active in anti-displacement organizing. When she moved to LA in 2019, she joined the Los Angeles Tenants Union, helping working class and undocumented families organize against unethical landlords and gentrification in North Hollywood. Upon moving to Portland a year later, she became a co-founding member of Don’t Evict Portland, a tenant-lead organization that is working to build tenant power and delay, reduce, or eliminate the harm and violence of evictions. Cecilia's work in organizing blends into her work as an electronic musician and DJ. The experiences she's had behind the decks and in organizing spaces have begun to meld. She has explored bringing music into the organizing space and weaponizing audio for disruption. In turn, this work is informing her audio production, bringing the theme and energy of collective action into her music production and collaborations.
