Classic country artist Gene Brown is best known for his quality recordings released by 4 Star Records (during the 1950s) and his Starday material (released during the 1960s). Brown maintained a regional cult following for several decades and kept the torch of traditional country music burning bright. Eugene Brown was born on October 24, 1927, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Gaitha and Tressie Emerson Brown. Gene grew up in Attica, Indiana, and moved to California as a young man. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Brown returned to California, before relocating to Springfield, Missouri in 1965. Brown was associated with Meyer Communications for over 35 years, where he held the position of General Sales Manager. As an accomplished musician, Gene performed professionally for most of his life and maintained a cult following in the genre of traditional country music. One of his groups included Gene Brown and The Golden Sails, which featured Calvin Miller, Boyd Manning and Jerry Meanown. This band were well-known in the Ozarks during the 70's and 80's and for their long tenure at the Grove Supper Club in Springfield. Brown also performed with a group known as Gene Brown and the Band of Renown. Sadly, Brown passed away on July 18, 2006 at the age of 78.
