The Night Crawlers were formed at Carleton College in the summer of 1965 by the Class of 1967’s Marc Reigel and Mark Headington, with three guys from Owatonna (MN) High School: Mike Jines, Bill Redeker and Barry Gillespie. The band’s only 45, “YOU SAY,” was released in 1966. Featuring Byrds-esque jangling electric 12-string guitar, the song became a local hit in Southern Minnesota in the same year, and also reached #1 on Chicago’s radio station WEEF even a few months after they played their last gig in June 1967. Since they disbanded, they have played six times: 1968, 1992, 2004, 2006, May 2010–with Marc, Mark, and Barry playing kind of an “un-plugged” set–and June 2012, at the Carleton Class of 1967 45th Reunion, at the Grand Theater in Northfield, MN. Recently, Marc Reigel has performed several sing-alongs in Ohio and Minnesota of 50’s and 60’s tunes (“Whole Lotta Shakin,” “Bye Bye Love,” “Peggy Sue,” “Unchained Melody,” e.g.). Mark Headington has played in a blues band, The Shufflin Duprees, in Lacrosse, WI. And Barry Gillespie has sung in a reconstituted “Us Band” in Owatonna, MN. The 12-string killer “YOU SAY” has been on a couple of garage compilations such as “Pebbles, Vol. 17” and “Hipsville, Vol. 3”. The original 45 is still an extremely sought-after record among garage rock collectors. Feathered Apple Records in Basil, Switzerland, has pressed small-spindle 45s of “Want Me,” an original Night Crawlers’ fuzz-buster, and “Feel So Fine,” originally by Johnny Preston, using tapes from a 1966 Summer recording session at Columbia Records in Chicago.
