Doing doughnuts in the parking lot of noise rock, hardcore, metal, math rock, no wave, and suburban punk, mid-90s Chicago band gooloo were known for their spazzy live show punctuated by antisocial antics and an inability to tune their guitars with any urgency. Founded as an instrumental two-piece in 1994 by high school friends Andrew Coon (Quatre Tete) and Mark William Pearson (Neptune), they soon tapped local weirdo guitar champ Adam Covalsky (ROM), who in turn brought in boy genius Paul Medrano (ROM) on bass and the quartet was complete. They released a 7" and one full length CD entitled Monkey By Default, recorded by Chicago punk legend Chuck Uchida, via the short-lived-but-influential Boston gnarler label Super 8 Records. Now available again digitally via Wrong Whole Archival Bureau, the Welcome To Atlantis/Cut It Out 7" has been remixed from 8 track cassette by Mark William Pearson and Monkey By Default has been remastered, along with bonus tracks, from the original DAT masters by Scott Craggs of Old Colony Mastering. While not well celebrated, gooloo maniacally sputtered down a path not many bands were taking at the time and possibly influenced someone somewhere. Maybe.
