American photographer and documentary filmmaker (b. 16 February 1952, Miami, Florida); lives and works in New York City. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is widely renowned for his large-format portraits, producing over 1000 celebrity photos. He was on Vanity Fair Magazine's masthead as contributing photographer from 1990 to 2017. Greenfield-Sanders won several prestigious accolades as a film director, including the Grammy Award for "Best Longform Music Video" and Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize nomination for his 1998 biopic Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart, dedicated to the iconic musician Lou Reed. Timothy is married to a US lawyer, Karin Greenfield-Sanders (née Sanders). Timothy Greenfield earned his Bachelor's degree in Art History from Columbia University in 1974, followed by a Master's in Film from the American Film Institute (AFI) in 1977. He became particularly well-known for large-format photography. In 1978, Greenfield began using a vintage 1905 Fulmer & Schwing camera with an 11 x 14" Ektapan black-n-white film; for his proccess, he would make "contact prints" from these large-scale negatives. In later years, as Ektapan film became unavailable, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders switched to a 1930s Deardorff studio camera with 8 x 10" Kodak color negatives. His photographs are in permanent collections at MoMA, the Museum Of Fine Arts, Houston, Metropolitan Museum Of Art, Whitney Museum Of American Art, Detroit Institute Of Arts, International Center Of Photography, Museum Of Fine Arts Boston, Philadelphia Museum Of Art, Los Angeles County Museum Of Art, Bibliothèque Nationale De France and other prestigious art institutions and museums. Some well-known figures photographed by Greenfield-Sanders include Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell, Serena Williams, Jimmy Carter (5), Gerald R. Ford, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush, Michelle and Barack Obama. He also produced over 700 portraits of renowned artists and musicians: Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Agnés Martin, Cindy Sherman, Joan Mitchell, Willem de Kooning, David Wojnarowicz, Kiki Smith, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Prince, and Cai Guo Qiang, to name just a few.
