Estonian-Swedish pianist and writer, born July 14, 1922 in Tartu in Estonia, died October 31, 2014 in Stockholm. She moved to Sweden in 1940. She studied at the Tallinn Conservatory of Music, in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland, among others with Edwin Fischer. In the late 1940s, she also studied composition with Eduard Tubin. She made her debut in Stockholm's concert hall in 1946. Her career became extensive and international and she collaborated with Igor Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith and Eduard Tubin, among others. She premiered Gösta Nystroem's, Moses Pergament's and Hilding Rosenberg's piano concertos as well as Lars-Erik Larsson's concertino. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Laretei also made cultural programs for SVT as both producer, host and, where applicable, pianist. She had her own television series and gave concerts in Carnegie Hall and the White House. She made recordings for the companies Philips, Cupol and Proprius. Laretei appeared with music in five films by Ingmar Bergman, to whom she was married in the 1960s. From 1968 she was a member of the Royal Academy of Music.
