Scottish composer and piper; born 1801 in the Reay country, died 1864 at Stirling. His prowess at playing and composing 2/4 marches puts him at the forefront as one of the fathers of the modern competition march and one of the great composers of bagpipe music. He composed many marches, including: “The 71st Quickstep” also known as the "71st Highlanders", “The Stirlingshire Militia,” “The Craigs of Stirling,” Angus Campbell’s Farewell to Stirling” and “Charles Edward Hope de Vere.”
