Luckey Jamal Davis’ musical legacy spans over 30 years starting out as a young singer, songwriter and producer. Born in Texarkana, Texas, Luckey learned the singing game as a teen on the streets of Oakland, CA. After moving to Los Angeles in the early 60’s, he formed his own band and started performing at local clubs around the city. During those early days not only did he perform, he booked and promoted his own shows. Luckey founded his own independent label called Big City in 1970. He spent most of his time producing and promoting his songs, including Northern Soul hits “Vacate,” and “Love is Better Than Ever.” He also wrote, produced and performed such cuts as “In My Heart,” “I Didn’t Realize,” and “It’s Not Where You Start.” By working with some of the best musicians in the business, Luckey worked with The Invincibles (“Heart full of Love”) on their southern tour. He promoted his 1st Rapp record on Toddy T (“Batteram”) all promotion and distribution of (Batterram )was done single handedly by Luckey on Leon Haywood's Label. Batteram became a huge success, he had to Hammer out a deal with Mercury records for distribution. One of his fondest memories was writing and co-producing songs with his best friend, Mickey Moore and his group The Numonics. Together they produced such titles as “Sexy Chile” (It went to number 45 on the Billboard charts), “One More Try,” and “Fox Trappin.’” Luckey thought he had gotten his big break when he received his first major record deal with Stax Records, a deal that was brokered by record executive Forest Hamilton, but the company went bankrupt in 1975. In the mid-1970s Luckey, along with Joe Jackson, father of The Jackson 5 and Forest Hamilton, published the first black custom car & cycle magazine, Soulful Wheels. The magazine was so popular that Luckey went on to produce and promote the first and the largest black custom car & cycle show of the same name at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Sponsored by American Honda, the show featured vintage and custom made cars and motorcycles owned by a variety of celebrities including professional football player and actor, Fred Williamson, major-league baseball player, Reggie Jackson, legendary entertainer, Sammy Davis, Jr., as well as members of the Jackson family, Joe Jackson and Tito Jackson. The Jackson 5 also made special appearances during the three-day event. By the 1980’s having worked over 20 years in the music scene, Luckey all but retired from the business. He went on to work on other projects, but never really forgotten his first love of writing and producing music. He has found new audiences around the world and has repurposed some of his old hits and made them contemporary. Luckey then started a new band called Bentley For Sale.
