David Masondo

South African vocalist best known as frontman with inflential mbaqanga band Soul Brothers (2) over four decades. Masondo was born in either 1949 in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa or 1950 in Hammarsdale (Mpumalanga), sources conflict. He first got into music in 1970 by starting The Groovy Boys, a trio that included bassist Zenzele ‘Zakes’ Mchunu, Themba American Zulu and guitarist Tuza Mthethwa. Masondo then moved the group to Johannesburg and added Mpompi Sosibo. The new group became known as the Young Brothers. The group made one more personnel and name change in 1974: adding keyboardist Moses Ngwenya, moving Masondo to lead vocals and becoming Soul Brothers. The next year, the group's breakthrough hit "Mshoza" made Masondo and Soul Brothers stars. Masondo died in Mayfair, Johannesburg, South Africa on July 5. 2015. He was 67.
