American guitarist, songwriter, producer, and label owner from Oakland, California. Considered to be one of the founding fathers of Oakland funk. Active from the early 1960s until has passing on the 11th January 2022. Marvin Holmes & The Uptights emerged as the Oakland Bay Area’s hottest soul band in the early 60’s and 70’s. “1051864” became a national hit, which led to the group signing with UNI Records. Marvin wrote songs that were recorded by the The Natural Four, Buddy Miles Express and Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm. In 1969, Marvin decided it was time to make a change in his music and formed Marvin Holmes And Justice, as well as Marvin Holmes & The Rush Experience. He then founded the label Brown Door Records. In the 80’s Holmes released , re-signed with MCA Records and recorded "7271724”. Later, he signed with Dean Hodges’ record company, 75 Girls Records and Tapes, contributing guitar to albums by rap artist Too Short.
