Kay Kay And His Weathered Underground was an band started by Kirk Huffman, Kyle O'Quin, and Phillip A. Peterson in Bellevue, Washington. The band included a rotating cast of players with as many as fifteen members performing at a time. Well over two dozen musicians staffed this super group with close ties to Gatsbys American Dream, Forgive Durden, Portugal. The Man, The Dear Hunter, Anthony Green, Rx Bandits, Damien Jurado, The Maldives, The Young Evils, and The Can Can Castaways. After recording a three-song cassette EP released on PureVolume and MySpace, a live CD/DVD was recorded in late 2006 at The Pretty Parlor in Seattle, Washington. On June 13, 2007 the band made their television debut on Late Night with Carson Daly. Shortly thereafter the band began recording their first self-titled album released in 2008 then touring with Rx Bandits and Portugal. The Man in August of that year. Touring again over the summer of 2009 in support of mewithoutYou, the band announced they had finished record their second album "Introducing..." and began freely streaming it across MySpace, Facebook, and PureVolume on August 14. In 2010, Kay Kay completed a U.S. tour with Damien Jurado acting as the opening act and touring band for the St. Bartlett album. After the tragic loss of their close friend and producer Tom Pfaeffle in 2009, their second full length album wasn't released until 2011. Staging some of the releases, the band produced both limited and common vinyl, CD's, digital copies, and an Instrumentals-only version of "Introducing...". Following the release, the band performed their first solo country-wide tour in the summer of 2011, also performing with The Dear Hunter and O'Brother. Along with their official releases, several live recordings were made with the likes of Daytrotter (2010), Audiotree (2011), KEXP (2011), and ArtZone Shuffle (2013). With permission and encouragement from the band, music enthusiast and friend Zacharias Boes recorded a number of live sets making them available for free to fans, including; The Bottom of the Hill (2010), Live at Mississippi Studios (2012), and Live at The Triple Door (2012). In 2012 the band announced plans for an third album tentatively titled "III" and an experimental cover album named "EXPERIMEDUCATION VOL. I". Unfortuantely, neither release was ever completed but all demos were made available by Kirk Huffman's SoundCloud. Two final singles were produced with an IndieGoGo campaign in early 2013 entitled "White Jeans Clean/Dress Like It's Summer (Sunshine)" and performed live on Seattle public television program Art Zone with Nancy Guppy that acted as the band's final performance. With changing lives and evolving musical tastes, Kay Kay And His Weathered Underground "called it good" after seven years, with Kirk Huffman confirming July 6, 2013 on Twitter. That same year, founding member Kyle O'Quin returned to Portugal. The Man, Thomas Hunter began touring with U.K. band The Heavy, and Kirk Huffman's solo effort as Real Don Music. Many of the rotating cast can also be found on the full length release "Everyman In Wonderland" by The Bluebird.
