American soprano Lane is a native of Detroit, Michigan, but has worked and lived in New York. She made her professional singing debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1974, the same year of her debut in New York's Carnegie Hall. Her repertoire ranges from classical to modern folk tunes and from serious religious music to light opera. Lane started taking vocal lessons while still in high school. She later studied at Spellman College (Atlanta), Juilliard School of Music (New York), Harlem School of the Arts, the Accademia Chigiana (Siena, Italy), and at Boris Goldovsky's Opera Institute (New York). She has performed and toured extensively in United States and Europe. In 1976, she sang the role of Clara in the Houston Grand Opera's revival of Porgy and Bess, a production that made its way to Broadway.
