American pianist, composer, arranger and record executive. House arranger, A&R and recording director at Mercury Records (1956-1969). Musical director of the Universal Studios (1970-1977). Born: February 4, 1911 in Brooklyn, New York. Died: March 23, 1995 in Los Angeles, California. Best known for his extensive arrangement work with Mercury Records artists like Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington and Billy May, from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s. He never charted as a songwriter but did as an arranger with songs such as "I Put a Spell on You" by Nina Simone and as conductor of the orchestras on charted songs such as Kay Starr's "Good And Lonesome". There weren't just a few of these but many. He was especailly fond of lush string arangements for artists such as Sarah Vaughn.
