Canadian musician, writer, liner notes author and critic who was born in Toronto in 1949. He is primarily known for his work as a jazz critic and has been active in the Canadian jazz scene since the 1970s. Broomer began his career as a musician, playing guitar in various jazz and rock bands in Toronto. He eventually turned his focus to writing, and his first book, "Time and Anthony Braxton," was published in 1979. He has since written several other books on jazz, as well as numerous articles and reviews for publications such as DownBeat, JazzTimes, and The Globe and Mail. Broomer has also taught jazz history and criticism at various institutions, including York University in Toronto. In addition to his work in jazz, he has written about other forms of music and art, including classical music, avant-garde cinema, and literature. Throughout his career, Broomer has been an influential and respected voice in the Canadian jazz community, and his writing has helped to shape the way that jazz is understood and appreciated in Canada.
