English violinist, arranger, conductor, teacher, composer, and a biographer of Sir Edward Elgar. Born 29 July 1876 in Frome, Somerset, England, UK - Died 2 July 1942 in Dumfries, Scotland, UK. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music. A founder member of the London Symphony Orchestra (1904-1934), serving as leader from 1912 to 1934, but is best known for his long personal friendship with Elgar (1910-1934) and his book 'Elgar As I Knew Him' (1936). In 1933, he became conductor of The Strolling Players. He taught at the Royal College of Music, London throughout his performing career.
